“We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must—at that moment—become the center of the universe.”
-Elie Wiesel
Dear Red Cross,
I borrowed the words of the notable Nobel Laureate to properly encapsulate the churning emotions I feel when I think of the neglected Amhara victims of famine in Northern Wollo region of Ethiopia. This is due to dereliction of duty by the Red Cross and the undue interference by the Ethiopian government who blocked humanitarian aid from reaching the people affected. Watching the cadaverous bodies of infants sucking on the equally haggard mothers is heartbreaking. Sources indicate that the situation is preventable and the lack of accountability on Red Cross for not reporting government’s interference as well as exacerbation of the situation into full-blown humanitarian crises is negligent at best and criminal at worst.
Although the area is part of the ongoing war between the Fano fighters and the Ethiopian government, the Fanos have shown alacrity to allow aid workers and aid to get through the to the people in need. However, the government has denied Red Cross or other aid workers to access the area. The government’s belligerence and Red Cross’s negligence are gravely costing the victims. We can’t emphasize enough the immediate need for humanitarian aid! Moreover. Red Cross in Ethiopia has forgone its duty to let the world know what’s going on in Northern Wollo. Thus, we beseech you to look into the matter and render aid with the outmost urgency! Thank you."
Sincerely,
