“Nairobi, Kenya — October 15, 2025 — A subdued yet searing sorrow has spread across Kenya and beyond today with the news that Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister and towering figure in Kenyan politics, has died at the age of 80.
According to hospital sources in India, Odinga collapsed during a morning walk at a facility in Kerala, where he had been receiving treatment, and was later pronounced dead after medical efforts failed to revive him.
A Life of Struggle, Vision & Unyielding Resolve Born on 7 January 1945 in Maseno, Kisumu County, Raila Odinga was the son of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President under President Jomo Kenyatta. From youth to elder statesmanship, he embodied activism, political ambition, and resilience.
He served as Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013, during a period marked by attempts at national reconciliation and constitutional reform. Odinga was also a longtime Opposition Leader, contesting the presidency in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022. Though he never captured the presidency, his influence on Kenyan democracy was profound.
His political journey was often tumultuous: he challenged injustices, faced arrests, and mobilized massive public support. Over decades, he became more than a politician—many considered him a voice for reform and a symbol of resistance.
One of his most significant achievements was his advocacy for constitutional change. Under his influence, Kenya adopted a new constitution in 2010—a landmark victory for governance, accountability, and citizens’ rights.
Final Moments & Immediate Reactions Odinga travelled to India earlier this month for treatment. He was staying at an Ayurvedic facility in the Ernakulam region of Kerala. On the morning of October 15, he collapsed during a walk within the premises of the hospital.
He was rushed to Devamatha Hospital / Deva Matha Hospital in Koothattukulam, where doctors pronounced him dead.
At the time of death, he was 80 years old. Kenyan and international leaders have already begun to issue condolences, recognizing the vacuum his passing leaves in political activism and public life.
Legacy & What Lies Ahead Raila Odinga’s passing marks the end of an era—a chapter of Kenyan politics shaped by struggle, sacrifice, and unrelenting resolve. He leaves behind a complex but enduring legacy:
• Champion of Democracy: His efforts significantly moved Kenya from one-party rule to vibrant multiparty governance.
• Constitutional Reformer: He played a pivotal role in the 2010 constitution, which restructured the governance architecture and strengthened rights.
• Bridge Builder: Though often polarizing, he strived to forge alliances across Kenya’s diverse ethnic divides.
• Voice of the People: His appeal reached distant towns and urban centers alike; his rallies and speeches resonated with many who felt unheard.
As Kenya prepares for national mourning, questions immediately arise: How will the opposition regroup? Who will step into roles of moral authority? And how will Odinga’s long-held dreams for justice, equity, and national dignity be kept alive?
Tribute & Final Honors Formal announcements from Odinga’s family and the government are expected soon regarding funeral arrangements and repatriation. Meanwhile, across Nairobi, Kisumu, and other cities, flags are already being lowered, and citizens are gathering in vigil and prayer.
Raila Odinga’s life was never easy, but to many Kenyans, it was a life of purpose, a life that strove for something greater than self. His voice may be stilled, but his influence and ideals will continue to echo in Kenya’s political landscape for years to come.”
